Some people in Barcelona go to the market to buy food. And it is very different from the supermarket. First the most of the products are not packaged, you can buy fruits (usually by kilos) or fish or meat or leeks or cheese...
The market you should visit in Barcelona is called the 'Boqueria' I recommend you to plan your visit early in the morning, during the day is very crowded, and you can have your breakfast there too. If the Boqueria is too far or your time is too short, visit the one near your hotel. You will feel how different the food culture in here is from yours.

Quick view of Barcelona
If you had just one hour to visit the city, the building you should view is the "Sagrada Familia" (Holy Family) the church designed by Antonio Gaudí.
When you cross the city you will notice the city is quite uniform, the most of the buildings have apartments from stage one on and shops at the ground floor. Even though there are several malls, you can shop everywhere in the city, you do not need to take your car to buy whatever, you can just walk for a little while.
If you go to a local restaurant, you will notice the menu has two courses, the first one is bigger than an starter, and the main course has usually the choice on meat or fish. You can have a dessert or an espresso to complete the meal.
And you will find places where to take a coffee or a beer just around the corner (or closer).
